I read the book The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. It took place during the holocaust and told a story about a Jewish boy in a concentration camp named Shmuel and a German boy named Bruno who was the son of a Nazi soldier. The two boys became friends and would meet at the fence of the camp almost every day and talk to each other. Near the end of the book Shmuel's father goes missing and Bruno agrees to disguise as a Jew and come into the camp to help Shmuel find his father. At the end of the book, before Bruno leaves the camp, both boys are killed. This story was very significant and it shows so much about what it was like in and out of the camp during the time. There were many significant ideas in the book and one of the most valuable ones was that if you handle a situation by hurting other people, the outcome will negatively impact everyone. The holocaust started when Germany didn't like the state they were in after World War ll so they blamed the Jews. Then they captured and harmed millions of Jews. So, Germany handled their situation by harming the Jews and it had a bad impact on so many people. In the story, Bruno and Shmuel were two of these people. This is still valuable today because in the world there are many problems and so many ways to handle them, but taking problems out on other groups of people will usually just lead to more issues. An example of one of these problems is racism because some people treat others that aren't the same as them different and in a negative way which doesn't make the problem any better. In the book there is a part where Bruno and Gretel are talking and Bruno asks about why the people kept on the other side of the fence and Gretel says "All the people on the other side of the fence are Jews." Bruno asks if they are Jews too and Gretel said "No, we most certainly are not. And you shouldn't even say something like that." This shows how lots of people felt negatively about people who were different from them. In this case a lot of how they felt had to do with blaming the Jews for their situation. So, they handled that by treating Jews unfairly which resulted in negative outcomes in so many places which could still be very useful to remember today.

The holocaust was an event that happened around the time of WW2. The Nazi army (led by Hitler) killed over 6 million Jews. They sent Jewish people to concentration camps where they had to live in horrible conditions and most of them died. People who agreeed with the Nazis believed that they were racially superior to the Jews. The book I'm reading takes place during this time. It is read from 2 points of view: a German boy who doesn't know his father is a Nazi and a Jewish boy in a concentration camp. I haven't gotten to the point where the 2 boys interact, but I know that at some point in the book they do. Today there are so many problems that have to do with harming or killing people based off of their beliefs which relates to the Holocaust. One specific example is Syria, where they're under the Islamic states control. A quote from the article says "in areas where they rule, beheadings in public spaces are daily occurrences. Execution by the sword is the daily penalty for apostasy, blasphemy, and homosexuality." This relates to the concentration camps and how the Nazis singled out Jewish people and attempted to kill them. Today in Syria the ruling group is singling out minority groups and killing people in them. Overall, both today in syria and during the holocaust people were killed because they don't believe the same thing as the more powerful group of people.
I am reading The Boy in the Striped Pajamas for ELA. It takes place in Germany during the Holocaust. The Holocaust was an event over time that killed about 6 million Jews. It was led by the Nazis who believed that the Germans were racially superior. One source says, "The Nazis, who came to power in Germany in January 1933, believed that Germans were 'racially superior' and that the Jews, deemed 'inferior,'...". A connection I can make between the Holocaust and something going on is how in both times many people single out different minority groups in different ways. One example is racism. That is a very big issue today and not much is going on to fight it, just like in the book. The perspective of most Germans was that they were just going to let it happen, most of them were fine with what was going on. So far the characters in my book haven't addressed what is going on, but I think that Bruno (the protagonist) will want to act against it. Almost any event that has to do with discrimination can relate to the holocaust.
Introduction Someone who is being mentored is more likely to graduate from high school and enroll into post-secondary education. According to NC Mentoring Partnership in 2017, adults who were mentored as a child were:
We were interested in this issue because it's important for kids to do well early on, so they will do better later on in life. We want to help kids so they can reach their full potential and become who they want to be. There are kids who have the possibility to do great things but some need a mentor to show them that is possible and give them some encouragement. Working with kids is something we all really enjoy. It makes us happy to see them work hard and most importantly, smile! You should care about this issue because it helps today's youth grow into productive adults that will one day contribute to our community. It helps them improve their social skills, friendliness, and collaboration with others. The kids that need mentoring could have a great future, they just need someone to show them they can do it. They need inspiration and encouragement to lead them to become good learners and make good decisions. Mentoring will give kids a positive attitude towards the responsibilities they will have to take on one day. If we can help these children, every child will have a better and brighter future. Body Paragraph: The issue Mentors are important especially to children who need a role model, someone to confide in, and to help with any personal and or academic problems they may have. One of the biggest issues with students for as long as school has been around is the fact that they think they aren’t smart simply because they’re behind. Having a mentor could really be beneficial to a child's self esteem. A modern day example of mentorings impact, a woman named Elaine was mentored at an elementary school as a part of ‘Mentor: The National Mentoring Partnership’ and met a first grader named Christina. Elaine never had a daughter so Christina filled that daughter role for her, while also influencing her into becoming a confident, caring adult who now spends her time mentoring a young girl in the same way Elaine had done for her (Mentor: The National Mentoring Partnership 2017). Statistics from ‘Mentor: The National Mentoring Partnership’ show that out of the young adults who were at risk of falling off track in their education but received a mentor in the end are 130% more likely to hold a leadership position. If these organizations and afterschool programs stop, there would be a loss of great potential. And all of these students will feel like they have no potential or they’re misunderstood. But having a good mentor to support them helps pave the way for a successful future. But in North Carolina you don’t see mentoring really anymore because some children are embarrassed to have a mentor, especially the kids who need one the most. Body Paragraph: The Solution This is definitely something that we need to fix. In fact, it is something that many organizations are doing right now. Some examples of organizations in North Carolina are nc mentoring, bbs triangle, and YMCA programs. What these organizations do is mentor in some of the areas nearby and get others to help them and enroll in mentoring. They also give information on what a mentor is and the benefits of mentoring. These organizations help children in need of learning so that they can become successful later on in life. The YMCA program mentors kids and help kids in K-5. They help kids with college readiness and give enrichment activities to kids in middle school. Either way there are still children that are out there that we need to help. Without mentoring it can cause things like bigger classes in school, so it is helping teachers out too. Mentoring could also help children so that they will not drop out of school later on in life and help them so they will feel ready to go to college and pursue the career path they want to take. With the help of mentors these children could go on in life and be able to get a great education and go on to get a good job. If our plan works out, we can work together to ensure that children can get the knowledge that they need for later on in life and also help them build a better social life with others. It is not only us who think this to. On mentoring.org it talks about how mentoring relationships is not only for learning but for growth to. It is also important to help children that are struggling in school or if they are homeless, because they have more of a chance to repeat a grade or have developmental delays later on in life. Conclusion What we can do is go to help kids personally. We can split up into groups and help kids or a class. We were thinking of mentoring First and Second graders at Bugg Elementary. We would help them read or we would read to them. This is a good place to mentor at because Bugg Elementary is a low income elementary school, it’s one of Wake county's highest need elementary schools. It’s also a title 1 school, an elementary support model school, and are a academically low performing school. If we can not mentor at Bugg Elementary, we would mentor at Stough Elementary because they have many Chinese immigrants that don’t know English and need to taught how to read and write in English. For this project we would need volunteers. We would choose about 20 students from Martin including us to be volunteers. We would have to choose about 16 students in the Sharrington group come with us. The plan is we would leave for Bugg Elementary in cars with registered parent and teacher volunteers right when school starts (7:30 a.m.). Once we get to Bugg, we will split up into groups based on which classroom we are in and read to kids in the first grade classrooms. At about 9:30, we will finish up with the first graders and go read to the second grade classrooms. Then we would finish up with the second graders at about 11:00 and head back to the school. We would back at about lunch time and we would have the rest of our classes like normal. If our plan works out, we would work with the NC Mentoring Partnership program. These guidelines will show what steps need to be taken to become a mentor and work with NC Mentoring Partnership: Step 1: Decide which type of mentoring is best for you. Consider the time commitment, age of youth, location and setting that you would prefer. Step 2: Search our database and contact your local community’s volunteer office or school system to find programs to fit your needs and interests. Step 3: You are offering to make a substantial commitment of your time. Be thorough in investigating your options before you choose the program that best suits your needs. We suggest calling or emailing at least three programs for more information. Talk to the staff about their specific application and screening procedures and what type of training and support they offer to their volunteers. Don’t be discouraged if a program isn’t a good fit. There are many more youth needing mentors than there are volunteers, so keep looking. Step 4: Complete an application for your chosen program. After submitting the application you can expect to go through a screening process that will include an interview and background check, then you will receive training before you are matched and ready to meet your mentee. Be patient as this process may take several months. Mentoring programs seek to ensure the quality of their matches and are concerned with the well-being and safety of both the children and volunteers. Just remember, becoming a mentor is well worth the effort, so be persistent in your efforts to complete the process. *Since the public will not be participating in our project, please go to ncmentoring.com if you would like to be a mentor to a child and help make this issue known throughout North Carolina.* The main goal of our project is to give these kids the chance to get the education that they need to get the job they want in the future and live a happy life. We will know that we have achieved our goal when we see kids who come out with a better understanding of reading. We will also notice if they have motivation to work hard and they want to learn. If the kids come out smiling we have done our job. Works Cited

I'm they type of person who is very intelligent, clumsy, and funny according to people. When I was young I would be called energetic and hyper and I think I still am. Overall I think personalities describe people and are usually positive things.
In North Carolina homelessness is one of our top struggles. There are over 4,000 homeless people in NC. This relates to our community because it is happening daily yet no one has fixed it. It will continue to become a larger problem until someone (or many people) really does something big. I am interested in this issue because I have volunteered to help these people many times and I have seen what it does to them. It can really damage a person and make it difficult for them to get back up into a normal life. It is really sad how easy it is for someone to become homeless and how once you start becoming that way it is hard for them to stop. Everyone in the community is affected by this because more homeless people means things like more poverty and illness. Others should care about this because it is up to us to fix it. We can't just ignore the growing issue. To help with this issue we all need to be involved. We can't leave it to other people to fix it because if we do that then nothing will get accomplished. So we need to all participate in helping to solve this issue!
Most people are aware that there has been a recent outbreak of the flu in North Carolina. This affects our community in a negative way, especially because there have been 16 flu deaths this year. The flu is extremely contagious and it's spreading fast. I am interested in this issue because I am at risk of getting this virus along with so many others. Everyone in the community is affected by this due to the issue of possibly getting the flu and spreading it to others. We should all care about this issue because the more people that get it the faster it will spread. There are many things we can do to help with this issue. The easiest one is to protect yourself by doing things like constantly washing your hands and not coming in contact with sick people. A second thing we could do is spread the word about the virus to others so they can do the same thing. If we all stay safe and protected, we can slow down this outbreak as soon as possible!
We all know that the US is the main place for immigrants, but many people wonder exactly why they choose here over other places. As most people know, immigrants are people that come from their home country to live in a foreign country. They commonly come from other places to live in America. There are many reasons for this. A large amount of immigrants come from Mexico and are looking for work in America to support their families back in Mexico. Most of these people come from poorer places in Mexico where it is hard to find work. The US itself is a free Country unlike many other countries. This gives people the freedom to practice their religion. Immigrants come to the US with the hope of becoming successful enough to provide a good life for their family and especially their children.
